Cutler doesn't have to be 'happy' in leading team

Jay Cutler will play in his first playoff game since he was in high school Sunday afternoon, this blogger's birthday, but the talk going into Sunday's game is not about his play on the field.
The talk is rather, what type of person Cutler is off the field. This is brought on by the "A-Rod" of sportswriters in Rick Reilly of ESPN, who showed up at Halas Hall on Wednesday when the offense had the podium and media day for the Bears.
Reilly ripped into Cutler when the quarterback from Santa Claus, Indiana when he took the mic and asked  him questions like "How many in this room know you?" "Did you idolize a quarterback growing up?"
Both answers where not to Reilly's liking. Jay said, he doesn't hang out with members of the media during the week and offseason and that he did not idolize a QB growing up.
That led to this lede in Reilly's story, "For a man from Santa Claus, Ind., Jay Cutler is one of the least jolly people you've ever met."
His points  on why Cutler is not jolly were noted as he didn't want to hear tips from John Elway when he was with the Broncos and said he does not do well with the media. Basically saying he could own Chicago if he wanted, but doesn't want to so there must be something wrong with the guy that dates reality TV star Kristin Cavallari.
Well, that lead Bears beat writer Bob LeGree to write this piece for the Daily Herald defending Jay. He makes some rather great points. Namely, he has never not given him a good answer when his questions are on point, unlike Reilly's. He has diabetes and spends time at hospitals helping and cheering up those in need.
While Jay is not chipper, I'm not asking him to be, he's not a hostile "hate the world" kind of guy, either. He doesn't like talking to the media, answering the same questions over and over again. To be real, as a writer myself, I can understand how that would be a bit ridiculous at times. He never doesn't answer, though.
Also, because Jay doesn't have an endorsement deal, he must be doing something wrong. Let's be real here and say most people's perspective on Jay came from his departure from Denver when Josh McDaniels arrived in town two years ago. Well, McDaniels just got canned, so that should show you what the thought is on how that move went down.
Yes, Jay may be a bit "different" but he's not breaking laws and he's not calling guys out in the media, so why hate him? He is compared to Eli Manning at times on his facial expressions and demeanor on the field. That is not something he can change. I find it rather funny people form opinions on a guy they have never met and don't follow much.


Alright, let's break down some actually football now that I've taken care of that and gotten it off my chest. There are four great games between teams that have all played each other during the regular season. I'll go in order of how the games will be played.
Ravens at Steelers, Saturday at 3:30 p.m.: This one is going to be close. How close? We are a Troy Polamalu sack-fumble away from this game being in Baltimore. That said, it's in Pittsburgh and that gives the advantage to the Steelers. The ESPN.com Insider Scout page literally has this game a toss up.  Well, yes, it will be close, but when in doubt, go with the home team.
Steelers 17, Ravens 13 in a great game.
Packers at Falcons, Saturday at 7 p.m.: During the regular season this game came down to a facemask call on a decent kick return that set up a Falcons field goal to win the game as time expired. Aaron Rodgers has won just two games decided by four points or less during his three years as quarterback because of plays like that. Oh, and plus he fumbled on the goalline that was recovered by the Falcons. Despite all of that, this might be the coming out party for Rodgers and the Packers. But don't expect James Starks to have another great game. I just don't see that.
Packers 28, Falcons 24 finally silencing Matty Ice for the season.
Seahawks at Bears, Sunday at noon: If you read my blog Monday with the 10 reasons why the Bears will not lose to the Seahawks you know which way I am going with this. This game is in 15 degree temps on the Lakefront. Any question of the Bears being over confident just has to remember how bad the Bears were whacked by the Seahawks in that 23-20 loss during the regular season. With that, this team will right a wrong and move on to the NFC championship game.
Bears 31, Seahawks 17 with it not being THAT close!
Jets at Patriots, Sunday at 3:30 p.m.: Will the score of this game be 45-3? No. But the Patriots will still beat down the Jets. I know I want the Jets out of the way in the worst way, which may be clouding me a bit, but the Patriots are that good and have something to prove too. And really, I think Bill Bellechick shares my disdain for Rex Ryan and wants to shut him up, too. Pile it on Pats!
Patriots 30, Jets 14 with a big second half of adjustments to break it open.

It's time for the Nussie Hunter portion of today's broadcast. With it being my birthday, I have to honor of my favorites, who happens to be in the latest edition of Maxim with a new sitcom debuting Wednesday night on NBC. Game 1 in the books, what lies ahead?

Yes, I stole this pic from SI.com, but hey, it was too good and I couldn't pass it up. It seems all of San Fran is in love with these dyed beards (although no one will admit it's dyed) that have propelled the Giants just three wins from the World Series title. Cliff Lee got rocked last night after looking untouchable to start the game. It was rather shocking to me and the people who Tweets I was reading on Twitter last night during the game.
So is this series all Giants? I wouldn't go that far. The Rangers are still ready pitching-wise and this one will come down to the "other guys" after Tim and Cliff like we predicted anyway. I still like the Rangers behind Cliff, starting with C.J. Wilson tonight. I would not count them out, but they need to win tonight to right the ship. I also think they did a little bit of something of "giving them something to think about" with how they closed the game out last night, making a bit of a rally in the late innings to put up seven runs in the loss.
The key, something I did not touch on yesterday here, was the defense. You will never win a World Series game where you commit three errors. That is something they are not accustomed to doing and probably got caught up in things.
Enough said.


I have not posted in a bit and have missed my NFL picks for the season. I've been mired in mediocrity much like my Bears through the first seven weeks, going just 58-46 on the season in picking winners.Well, my teams doesn't play this week, so my judgment will not be clouded in their game. One game a microcosm of the season for the Bears

In the matter of three hours Sunday in Chicago the Chicago Bears showed basically how the season has been in a nutshell for fans, players and coaches.
There was the start, the initial thud of Ryan Grant running through and from the Bears defense and getting things started. Yeah, I was not happy and it was a horrible display of defense.
Then the Bears offense sputtered and Jay Cutler threw an interception as the lead for the Packers grew to 13-0 after a pair of field goals. Yeah, it looked bleak early.
Then, as the Bears have done at times, things almost looked like us fans thought they would. A great throw by Jay cut the lead to 13-7 and the defense came up with a turnover that turned the Packers away just before the half. The momentum seemed to be going in the Bears favor and the second half went in their favor again after missed Mason Crosby field goal and another Jay Cutler touchdown gave the Bears the lead.
Yes, they had the lead. Pretty remarkable, actually. But then, it all fell apart.
The offense started to sputter and Jay Cutler, who had not thrown a bad interception yet, threw an awful pick that set up what turned out to be the winning touchdown.
Then while the Bears were attempting to tie the game Lovie showed why he keeps getting mentioned as possibly losing his job with that whole using two timeouts for one challenge thing. I mean really? C'mon!
So yes, it was a 21-14 loss to the hated Packers as the season of disappointment continues to hit all-time highs. The Bears did find an answer in Devin Aromashoduh (sp?) that could be a threat at WR and the defense, after the 62-yard run on the first play of the game for the Packers, played rather stout.
So the defense graded out well, the offense, with mixed results and special teams was decent. It's been the story of the season. They have not found and answer in the slightest and I'm positive some sort of coaching change is going down at the end of the season. Whether that's Lovie or Ron Turner, I'm not exactly sure yet.



Alright, time for some positive vibes on this space today. The Brewers made it official and introduced Randy Wolf to the Milwaukee media and the people today. He made it clear he was happy to come here and would be happy to help get this team back in the playoffs! Yessir, that's what I like to hear and I know he's got the money, but when a guy puts the effort and makes it clear he's happy in his choice, it makes it sweeter.
I'm going to say this about Randy Wolf and I said it last week when the signing became official, he has the potential to be great here and lead this team. I really like the offense the team has and it won't take much in terms of pitching - just defense - to get this team over the top and back in the playoffs. I'm talking a division title this year, but the Cardinals are going to be tough. Even last year with what looked like a dream team, they struggled down the stretch. I'm not exactly sold on the Cubs, either, so it's wide open. Why not Brauny, Prince, Tits and the gang?!?!

Now I got some funny little bits. And they're Tiger Woods bits. I'm pretty sure it's witty and not tasteless. I'm about done on this topic, but found a few things over the weekend so I figured I'd post them here.

Is this the year A-Rod finally gets a ring (And has a hand in it)?

The World Series has started tonight as I'm writing this and I must say I am rather excite to get a chance to see the two best teams in each league squaring off in the Series that matters.
I say the two best teams, because you know how it goes, a team gets hot and makes a run through the playoffs, but it doesn't give us the best two teams in the Fall Classic. Well we got it this year.
Both teams have great pitching. Both teams have a great lineup from top to bottom and both teams have great managers. Well, that last one may be what it comes down to as Yankees fans have been sounding off on Joe Girardi and his mishandling of the bullpen in the ALCS.
I'm not going to get into great analyzation of the series, because I don't think those of you that follow the game want to hear me talk about teams I don't know much more than the average fan knows. Hey, it's not my team that I follow every day and baseball is a sport where you almost need to pay attention everyday in order to know a team as good as you need to.
Still, I can make a pick for a winner in this series.
I have followed the playoffs pretty closely and I must say this is a tough one to pick. Like I said, I like both teams.
Here goes: I'll call starting pitching a wash, offense a wash and defense equal. What the Yankees have the Phillies don't is a guy that can finish the game on the hill. His name is Mariano Rivera and my best friend Vaughan would be happy to know I'm taking the Yankees in 6. It's very close though and could be one of the best World Series of the last 10 years, at least.




In other sports news today, It became official that one of my childhood idols, Hulk Hogan, was going to make a push to get back in the wrestling scene by signing with Total Non-stop Action on Spike TV. Given all he's been through, it's good to see him back on his feet. Here's the video from the announcement.
Let me just say that if TNA wants to compete with WWE this could be a move that puts them on the map to wrestling fans and could help them start to build even more steam than they already have. Along with Hogan, Eric Bischoff is coming on to TNA, as well, and that might be an even bigger move as Bischoff had a big hand in getting WCW on top of WWF back in the mid-'90s and knows talent in the business.



In more of an entertainment item, if you haven't seen Tuesday night's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Artie Lange from the Howard Stern show was on and was followed by hottie Olivia Munn from G4-TV's Attack of the Show.
Let's just say Artie on his own was awesome, but when Olivia came out comic mayhem ensued.
This is the entire episode, so here's a cheat sheet. Artie comes on at about the 25:50 mark for a segment. Olivia is on for the segment following that and they play ping pong toward the end at around the 36 minute mark.



Since we're on the subject of Olivia Munn, the Nussie Hunter wasted no time suggesting her for today's spot. She looks absolutely amazing in that dress on the show. And I can't get "Sweet ass in your face" out of my head. She is absolutely funny as hell. And yes, she's also an absolute bombshell. Check it!
