Who dat! Going to the Super Bowl?

Judging by the ratings Sunday's AFC and NFC title games were some of the most watched non Super Bowl games in 30 years. And with the great story lines coming in, it is hard to argue with that.
I'll say Peyton's great comeback against the Jets was great and was topped by the great game that finished the night. I'll say the Saints and Vikings delivered more twists and turns than Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, Wis. (That means a lot!)
I'll have to say it was right here where I correctly picked the winners of both games. My first perfect week of the playoffs. Yeah, it was a rough one. But when it mattered most I came though.
I'd have to say I was pretty happy to see the Saints win probably more than Peyton and the Colts. Almost because that win almost seemed like a no-brainer.  But the Saints, with that certain quarterback playing for the Vikings had a bit of a story to go against and a damn good team.
I am alone in being tired of the Katrina story? Now I'm all for getting the city back together and the people being happy, but that was about four years ago. Maybe it's because instead of talking about talent on the team, everything is about the people of the city. I feel like we got to know more about the PLAYERS  on the Vikings as much as we did the PEOPLE of New Orleans. Guess that's just a gripe I have with media.


January 26 is also a pretty special day. It is the birthdate of one Bob Uecker, aka "Mr. Baseball" aka the voice of MY Milwaukee Brewers. The man has spent 55 years in baseball. The 2010 season will be his 29th as play-by-play man of the Brewers and turned 75 today.
Yeah, I'd have to say he is back in rare form. I was a bit critical of him a couple years ago. He had been calling such a bad team he just let his stories take over the game. Then when the Brewers started winning, he had to find a good mix. Well, he's figured it out and is back on point.
I'm sorry for doubting you. I loved Mr. Belvadere! Haha. That pic above, by the way, is from a couple years back. There was a furry convention at the same hotel the Brewers were staying at. Comedy ensued on the air that day, too.
A couple rare baseball facts for you, he caught the game that made Warren Spahn the winningest left handed pitcher in MLB history. Also, he's a career .200 hitter. That would be why he jokes about his on-field shortcomings all the time.
He's a good pitchman....

Alright, time for the Nussie Hunter portion of the show. Andy Roddick fell this morning in the Aussie Open. With the loss I couldn't help but think of his wife and how much she must feel bad. Yeah, when it's none other than SI swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker, you think about this sort of thing... Check it!

Championship Sunday is just around the corner!

First off, I'd like to say my apologies for all of the photos turning into "Bandwidth Exceeded" graphics the last couple of days. I got an E-mail yesterday that said I had exceeded my 10 GB bandwidth at Photobucket. I think that means the site is doing pretty good and I had to upgrade my photo hosting to allow for an unlimited bandwidth.

Now that we got that out of the way, lets' get into making my Super Bowl picks. Now that both of my preseason picks (the Chargers and the Bears. Yes I know. Thought we had a shot to get one right), it's back to the drawing board. I like both matchups Sunday and should be two great games.
Let's start with the 2 p.m. game that has the Jets going to Indy to play the Colts. A lot is being made of the history of these franchises, but to be honest, that means nothing to the guys on the field. It's great history, but will have no effect on what happens Sunday.
Was looking over this week's Sports Illustrated, I am a subscriber, and they break things down. Looking at how the Colts did what they had to do to the Ravens, I'm saying we get more of that this week. Peyton is too smart and will find the holes in this defense to get the Colts out front. On the other side of the ball, the Colts D has been playing great and if they can get to Mark Sanchez and knock him out of his game, they'll make it easy. This will be about stopping the run for them and if they can keep Thomas Jones quiet for the day. The Colts are pretty one-dimensional relying on the pass almost exclusively and that should allow the Jets to put Reggie Wayne out on Revis Island for the day and let them keep a the extra safety deep to keep an eye on Dallas Clark.
I must say though, I really like the Colts to earn this win. Remember, the only reason the Jets are here is because the Chargers lost that game. They beat themselves. The Jets just lucked out. Yes I just said that.
On the NFC side, its the Vikings and Saints. I think everyone is expecting this game to be a shootout. I'd say if it becomes that, the Saints will be right at home. Putting pressure on Brett Favre to have to score points usually leads to turnovers. The fact that the Vikings have lost their last three home games plays a part in this, too. I don't really like anyone going into the Superdome and getting a win. Now if the game were in the Humpty Dump, I'd probably be saying the Vikes have the upper hand, but we're in Nawleans and for that it's time for the Saints to March on. Drew Brees is just cool in the big games and if he can get production out of Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush like he got last week, the Saints will give that vaunted Minnesota D fits.
For the Vikings, finding a way to get Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor off and running is going to be a key for them. Take pressure off Favre until he has to make the play. He seems to play within himself more in those situations. Not to mention the Saints defense isn't that good and getting them to bring that extra guy into the box will allow "Brent" to play the 1-on-1 matchups that could lead to big plays.
Like I said, I like this being a close game. I'm not so sure it will be as high scoring as people think, but I like the Saints.

AFC Title Game: Colts over Jets, 20-17. Jets D will make some plays to keep it close, but not enough of them.
NFC Title Game: Saints over Vikings, 24-20. Another close one with the Saints making the big plays let and Favre making at least one of his patented "dumb" plays that costs the Purple Dumpster Divers the ballgame.

Keeping it on the Vikings, did you hear this awful Prince fight song he was inspired to write after going to the game last week? Eesh! Stick to Purple Rain!



This next item is something from last night's Conan. Tonight is his last Tonight Show and if he brings guys like Pee Wee, then it's going to be good. If you know me, you know I love PW and he was awesome on this. Check it!



Alright boys and girls, time for today's Nussie Hunter. Was checking something on Asylum today, who counted down the most exposed women of the last decade. Remarkably one of them hasn't graced our pages. Yep, Jessica Alba. She is part of the Jessica trifecta and somehow the Nussie Hunter has gone over 100 posts without her. Well, not anymore. Guess I'm helping in the over exposure, but hell. She looked good in that cat suit in Fantastic 4! ... And here.

Golberg's Way: Mike Leach unfairly let go?

It's been over a week since my last post and I did have an idea on where I wanted things to go today, but when I got a call from one Josh Golberg to sound off on this whole Mike Leach fiasco going on at Texas Tech, I couldn't refuse. Golberg could be the college sports guy for Wilber's Way and would like to see him continue to send me things like this. It's well done and would welcome more. (Yeah, I hope he's reading this!) So here goes!

For those following college football and Capital One Bowl Week more closely than our man Wilber here, something happened today that made my blood boil: Mike Leach, the head coach of Texas Tech, was fired.

Now, I’m a Wisconsin Badgers fan. With the exception of taking an inexplicable liking to Boise State (7-8 years ago), that has been my only college allegiance. I cheer for no other college team save for my alma mater, UW-Whitewater. I neither like, nor dislike, Texas Tech. Although I did admire them for going out and getting a proven winner for their hoops team a few years ago…namely Bobby Knight.

To sum up the problem: sophomore wide receiver Adam James (son of ESPN football analyst Craig James) suffered a concussion and coach Leach apparently had him locked/sequestered in an equipment room/broom closet or some other small enclosure under the supervision of a trainer. James reported this to the administration. They promptly suspended Leach for the Alamo Bowl. Leach filed a motion to coach the team. Tech then fired him. That pretty much brings us up to speed.

Couple things to consider before looking at the so-called “victim” in this case (Adam James)… 1) It seemed like Leach really never got along with the administration. After last season [their best in history, by the way] Leach got locked in a contract extension snafu and was moments from heading elsewhere before signing a 5-year, nearly $13 million deal to stay. 2) He was due an $800,000 bonus TOMORROW just for being the head coach on Dec. 31st. Store these two things away.

If you know anything about college athletes…they’re babies, whiners, prima donnas and walking time bombs. James’ statistics at Tech this year are nothing staggering: 17 catches with 1 touchdown this year. All this while playing in a pass-happy offense. Assuming you have a scholarship at Tech as a wide receiver, one can only assume you can run a route, catch the ball in traffic and hang onto it. But…Tech currently has 21 receivers on its roster. Yes…21!!!

Okay…you poor all these into a mixing bowl, add some butter, flour, a dash of cinnamon and a cup of milk…tah-dah…you’ve got a pretty good recipe for a scandal. At least that’s the way I see it. So here’s MY working theory on how this went down…starting from the beginning:

-Adam James thinks highly of his playing abilities as a receiver.

-He goes to Texas Tech, a place he thinks he can blossom a la Michael Crabtree.

-James gets lost in the shuffle, probably throws a few tantrums about playing.

-Coach Leach despises this behavior.

-James gets a concussion and continues to gripe.

-Citing concern for James’ safety, Leach locks him away for three hours.

-James gets out of said closet/room and phones bigwig poppa.

-Daddy at ESPN phones Texas Tech athletic director.

-Athletic director phones University president.

-Administrators, fearing boycott of ESPN programming, are compelled to act.

-They suspend Leach, hoping an apology is issued on his behalf.

-Leach does no such thing, feels he did no wrong and fights it.

-University officials wet their pants not foreseeing this.

-The dorky University accountant in the corner says they could save 800 large by firing him before midnight tomorrow.

-Texas Tech fires Coach Mike Leach.

Does this seem plausible and extremely likely to anyone else, given what we know?

Did the kid do something to piss off the coach? Maybe. Was he in grave danger or his life in danger while he was locked in that closet/room for three hours? Doubtful. Regardless, isn’t it a coach’s job to dictate discipline and penalize his players? If the player has a problem with it, so what? If he’s put in harms way, then it’s a problem. But have any of the trainers said anything? Or the assistant coaches? Not that I’ve heard or read. Maybe we should get their opinion.

It boils down to one simple thing, which we’re seeing more of: parents (specifically fathers) getting more involved with their son’s or daughter’s collegiate career and believe they know what’s better for him/her than the coach. Factor in someone with money/power/creditability or a big reputation and something bad is bound to happen.

We’re seeing this more and more as a different generation of youth transition into adulthood. Kids think they deserve more for doing less. The likelihood that Adam James was given every opportunity to succeed in the athletic world is extremely high. I’m guessing when he found out his skills didn’t match up with those around him, he did his best to put it on the coach for some other reason not involving him being talented enough to hack it. So what’s the answer? In this day and age…go crying to daddy.

See... That was pretty good! He's got a Nussie Hunter segment for today too, but I need to get a little jab in on the Bears' HUGE win over the Vikings Monday night.



I didn't get a chance to watch the Bears game Monday night as I was watching my ninth basketball game of the day for that other Web site I write for. But I was following along with the game and was getting texts all night from friends as the Bears played out of their minds for over three quarters, nearly blew the game and then seized it back.
Jay Cutler earned himself FedEx Air player of the week honors and showed what many fans, including myself, had expected of him all year. And you're saying where did this come from? Well, it's simple. Watch how much time Jay had to throw in the pocket. Each time Jay was able to survey the field and move around a bit in the pocket he hit the guy he wanted to.
It was something that was missing all year. He's been running for his life and instead of taking the sack, he tries to make stuff happen which results in the interception.
I'd say two things on the matter. First, Chris Williams showed he is the man at left tackle and will be there for the foreseeable future. That has to make Jay happy and helps solidify this offensive line that has been in flux all season. Second, I'm pretty sure Lovie saved his job, but someone is still going to take the fall for this rough season as the Bears will make a change at offensive coordinator. I'm not sure who that will be, but Jay is the key to the puzzle and they need to build around him. Start there and get him the pieces to make this team a winner. I'm talking wide receiver, offensive line, everything.

Alright, now it's time for the Nussie Hunter of Golberg's choice:

This gentlemen, is Lucy Pinder. Do you know of her? My guess is no. And that in itself, is a travesty. She’s 26 and an English model/actress. And the last time I checked her Wikipedia page, her cup size was a letter of the alphabet I normally don’t associate that measurement with. (It’s since been removed I think) What I love about Britain, is that they do photo shoots and magazine spreads that make American’s uncomfortable. Please note that this does not bother me. If you want more of her…try Google or her official website. Just make sure you’ve taken your heart medication.

Fouth loss of season by 20 or more raises eyebrows in Chi-Town

It's becoming an almost regular occurrence for me to take to this space on Monday's and back Lovie Smith and say how he should keep his job and this season isn't totally his fault. Well, boys and girls, I'm starting to change my opinions. Another dismal loss without any positives to take whatsoever, besides the fact that NFL teams are allowed to be the only flight that lands in a major city during a snow storm, is a tough one to take.
The offense was bad all around, the defense crumbled and the special teams never really got a chance to do anything.
If the team just wasn't good I'd be OK, with just saying it, but Lovie dances around the topic during post game press conferences and then during his Monday meeting with the media makes a fool of himself.Yeah, he's losing a supporter and I'm not sure what I can say any more to back him.
I am a loyal guy and I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt to turn things around. I think the team needs a change in the offense for Jay's sake and some help. That's a point I've made clear before.
The defense needs playmakers. Lovie is calling that side of the ball this year and at times they have looked darn good. Losing the unit's best player hasn't helped matters much.
The fact of the matter is this, since the Bears lost Super Bowl XLI, the Bears have failed to reach the playoffs. That's something that cannot be argued. Players age and schemes around the NFL get built to take down Lovie's Cover 2 scheme. It is something very similar to what the West Coast offense did against the 4-6 defense back in the 80s. The Bears never got out of San Fran or New York after that.
I just hope Jerry Angelo knows what he's doing because lately he hasn't shown he does. Only make a move at the top if you know you can upgrade because I like to think Lovie is damn good at what he does.


Was combing the Interweb today and came across this story about a little dissension between Brett Favre and Brad Childress in Minnesota. I know there was an argument between the two of them, but I say this, don't read into this too much. They are good friends and Childress was trying to look out for the franchise and get the old guy out of a 19-point drubbing to the lowly Panthers.
I guess I live in Wisconsin and would like to see Favre and the Vikes tank down the stretch and see the Saints take the NFC so whatever trouble I can spot in Minnesota I'll take as a good thing. Not sure this will be much though. They Vikings do play the Bears on Monday night next week and unless it's 30 below or snowing like crazy on the lake front in Chicago next week, I don't see the Bears giving them a run.

And today's Nussie Hunter is a bit of a tribute. Heard news that Brittany Murphy passed over the weekend. Pretty sad. She was in Clueless and was awesome in 8 Mile next to my man Marshall. I figured I'd take this time to honor her in all her glory.

It's official: Bears playing for pride from here out

OK, believers in "The Way" I know I haven't posted in, wow, six days, but I'm back and looking to reflect on what was a wild end to Thanksgiving Weekend.

First off, let me start on my Bears getting pummeled in Minneapolis yesterday at the hands of the Vikings. I made a Twitter post about this last night that pretty much ends what may be the most disappointing Bears season of my lifetime. I can't remember ever having such high expectations shattered like this in my years of following this team.
And again it came down to just being overpowered by the Vikings on both sides of the ball. There were some times when it looked like it could have been a closer game as the Bears defense forced a fumble early and helped keep the Vikings to just 7 points in the first quarter.
After that, missed chances proved too much and the Vikings just showed how good they were when they made it a 24-7 game at halftime. And it was another "here we go again" moment for this team.
Then the second half happened and pretty much slapped the Bears out of anything resembling a search for something positive to take out of the game. That's what 2 yards of total offense (YES TWO GODDAMN YARDS!) will get you in the second half.
This team is no where near where people thought it was at the beginning of the season, especially me, after picking them to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl in February.
I'll get to what could be an answer to fix this team in a minute in one of my other pressing issues later...



And watching the game with (GULP!) my favorite Vikings fan, Amanda, I can say I officially heard it from all angles. Well, she's too sweet to be mad at, so hey. She wins the bet we had and now I owe her a date. :D



Yep, Charlie Weis has officially been shown the door at Notre Dame. And I've been saying for a while after reading something by the Chicago Tribune's David Haugh that this was the guy I though the Bears should look at if he was available. I mean, let's be real, this is now Jay Cutler's team and General Manager Jerry Angelo needs to do everything in his power to give him the the tools to succeed. Bringing in Charlie as the offensive coordinator would be the first step to show he's committed. I mean, he's got a heck of a track record with quarterbacks (starting with Tom Brady) and would be a breath of fresh air in the Windy City.
I like this as the start to build around Jay and get him the pieces he needs. Plus, I'm sure with an OC like Weis and a QB like Jay, the Bears could draw the No. 1 receiver they are looking for. It is the one thing they are lacking from the skill players offensively. That's not mentioning the offensive line which needs to be reworked this offseason because it is been downright awful this year.

And yes, I can tell you that this is Jay's team. Even though my favorite Bear, Brian Urlacher, piled on the guy I go to bat for anytime someone bashes this team, Jay. I guess when a member of the media, in this case, Yahoo! Sports' Michael Silver, spends a day watching the Bears game with the All-World middle linebacker.
As David Haugh puts it in the Tribune today, the comments Brian made make it clear he indeed may have called the new quarterback a "Pussy" on the eve of training camp.

No this is not yet the "Nussie Hunter" portion of the broadcast, I have a good one planned for you today, that's the Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year" Derek Jeter with "The Mrs." Minka Kelly in St. Bartz. (Yeah, she's hot!)
He did bring the trophy back to the Bronx this year and as I found out from spending a lot of time cheering with my boy Vaughan during the playoff run, the guy is a hero to NYC. So, hell why not. I'd say he deserves it.
Oh, and plus, I'm always looking for a reason to get Minka in this space in a bikini so when Jeter gives her the grand tour of St. Bartz, it's like gasoline on a fire! Ha!

Alright, we've now reached the Nussie Hunter portion of today's blog and I must say it's a special treat today. We're going to do a side-by-side comparison today for the first time in Wilber's Way history. I'm sure by now you've heard of the situation involving Tiger Woods Thursday night around 2:30 a.m. when he wrecked his car. Well, I'm not going to re-hash the events, but I will show you both of the women he's "involved" with and you tell me which one you would rather have. I'm going to go on record as saying Elin Nordegren, the incumbent wife and mother of his two children is much hotter than this Rachel Uchital he is rumored to have had an affair with.

Hello Wilber's Way!
I'm sure most of you have heard my name mentioned here before. My Name is Amanda or aka AJ and yes, I am the first female writer to be featured on Wilber's Way. I'm mostly known for giving Aaron ideas on what Nussie should be posted (just lately though), for it's a on going process of which "hottie" is worthy to see Wilber's Way. As Aaron mentioned in yesterday's blog, he's out on assignment for his FT job so a few of his friends get to take over Wilber's Way for a couple days. Well without further ado, let's put a face with a name.

If you look back to the blog dated November 11th: Aaron stated that it was the last time you would see a sighting of J.J. Hardy on Wilber's Way, since being traded to the Minnesota Twins. Well, he should of known better handing the reins over to me, that I would make sure J.J. Hardy was seen on Wilber's Way one last time. I am a huge fan and thought that he deserves one last look.

Okay, onto the real sports talk now people.... You were probably wondering when I was finally going to talk about sports, right? After all, this is a sports blog. Well, here's the scoop. I really know nothing about sports. I love to watch baseball and football, and I enjoy playing basketball. So please don't expect me to give you stats or play by play because it's just not there. I know more than the average woman does about sports, but by no means am I a sports editor.
However, it is football season.
How about let's talk about another one of my favorite athletes:
Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings.



Adrian is not any older than I am, scaling in at only 24 years old. He went to high school in Palestine, TX and attended college at Oklahoma University or OU. Adrian was the first player in school history to rise above 3,000 rushing yards in two seasons. His senior year at OU he decided that he would forgo his senior year of college and enter the 2007 NFL Draft where it was predicted that he would be a top five draft choice. On April 28, 2007, Peterson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with seventh overall pick. Three months later on July 29, 2007, Adrian signed his contract with the Vikings for $40.5 million over five years. On February 10, 2008, Adrian won the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl MVP award with 16 carries for 129 yards rushing along with two touchdowns. The 129 rushing yards was the second in Pro Bowl history. Adrian was the first rookie since Marshall Faulk in 1995 to win the Pro Bowl MVP award. 2009 is Peterson's third season in the NFL, his current stat for rushing yards to date is 4,018. Currently, Adrian Peterson is among one of the top running backs for rushing yards in the NFL. As a Adrian Peterson fan or "AP" as I say, "Go Vikings."

Julia Stiles is by far my favorite actress. She's most famous for her role as Sara Johnson in "Save the Last Dance" and Nicky in "The Bourne" series with Matt Damon. If you know Julia at all, she is a very classy, down to earth type of girl. Trying to find a "half-naked" picture of her so she would fit in with the other Nussie's that have been featured, was a little difficult I will admit. But, I did it and I hope you enjoyed yourself.

I'm a female, and not all the time do I enjoy looking at the Nussie section. I'd like to look at some male bodies for once. (Sorry Aaron, I'm apologizing in advance for having a "half-naked" man featured on "WW")

Could you call that a Flying Jay-bird?

Hello all. I'm back after a big of a long weekend, had to run to catch Favreapalooza last night, so I'm back.
Let me first chime on in the big Bears win Sunday afternoon. I was sober enough to recount all of the game and the first half left something to be desired. The defensive play was horrible. Twenty-one points in the first half is way too much to give up to anyone, let alone the Lions.
Just as the Bears had done in the first half of the previous two wins, the third quarter was where they tore the heart out of opponents. All thanks to a little thing Lovie and the coaches call "coach 'em up."
As this story, from Monday's Chicago Tribune said, the Bears made two big coach decisions that paved the way for change. The first was on the opening kickoff of the second half as Johnny Knox went 102 yards for a touchdown. That's a hat tip to special teams coach Dave Toub.
The other adjustment was one I was calling for in the first half as Calvin Johnson shredded the Bears' secondary for 5 catches and 119 yards. At halftime, Lovie made the move to have Charles Tillman shadow him to whichever side he went on and it ended up paying off as Johnson had just 3 catches for 14 yards.
In fact, the defense as a whole was on in the second half, especially the defensive line, which gave position coach Rod Marinelli the game ball in helping beat his old team (you know the one he led to an 0-16 record last year).
Jay Cutler was not overly impressive on this day, but he was good enough and didn't do anything to lose the game for the Bears. Plus, he made an amazing dive into the endzone (above) which looked a lot like the John Elway play from Super Bowl 31 against the Packers. (Yes the Elway comparisons must continue).



And I'm checking on Tuesday so I figured I'd weigh in on this Brett Favre BS. I'll make it short and sweet, I swear.
I thought Brent, I mean Brett, looked rather good. He was on point in this one. He made the big play when he needed to and that led to the win. His offensive line was on point and that was probably the biggest difference. To me it looked like Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers was going to make Favre beat him and not let Adrian Peterson do it.
The one play I thought Favre messed up on was an attempt at a 40-yard bomb with 3 minutes left that stopped the clock with an incomplete pass instead of taking 40 more seconds off the clock. Aside from that I thought he and Aaron Rodgers were rather even, minus what the stats will tell you (Rodgers does have more yards).
Rodgers was doing it with a downright AWFUL offensive line. I do not know where the Packers coaching staff got off saying these guys were ready to play during training camp and the preseason because both tackles have been worked through four games.
As a Bears fan, I thought we saw enough from both teams to get a good gameplan together and see how one would go about exploiting them.

NOW, it's time for the Nussie Hunter portion of the blog. I wanted to do this yesterday, but couldn't get one up. It's still good though. Allow me to introduce you to Natalin Acvi (Follow her on Twitter). She is smoking hot and was asked to pose for a photoshoot with new L.A. Laker Ron Artest. (He actually set it up for himself, actually, which is a baller move if you ask me). It was actually featured on SI.com's Hot Clicks and it made her the No. 1 trending topic on Google yesterday.
